As you said its just a game, but there are questions, it is normal! And after questions there are answers!
I understand what is your question! I have the answer, but first of all I have to say that there is not any cheating at all!
What you describe is a memory issue, a memory bug, that is related to internet traffic problems between two players, who are far away each other and are connected by the game's servers at another location.
When the opponent's picture is not possible to be loaded by the game, because of internet traffic problems, the game selects a pic that is already loaded in device's memory.
This can be:
- Our previous opponent's pic, sometimes under the same name, sometimes not, so we think that we play against the same opponent multiple times
- Our own pic and name, so that we think that we play against ourselves, but it is not correct!
- No pic at all! These are the opponents that we used here in the forum to call them "ghosts"!
So no worries, you play against a normal player, somewhere out there! I don't know if opponent has the same experience, or sees everything normal!
Sometimes it happens that our opponent's pic is loaded finally when the match ends! Thats why you see a different pic at the end!

Another thing you can do is something I do or try to do every three games I play in Royal Championship, go to settings, apps, Candy Crush Jelly, storage, clear cache. That clears your memory in the game.
