Which reply experience do you prefer in the Community?

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all having a great summer (or winter, in the southern hemisphere!) We’ve seen quite a lot of feedback about sub-replies since they were launched, especially from players saying they preferred the way the Community worked before.

We’ve been discussing this internally and with the moderators, and we’d like to try something for a couple of days. For now, we have removed sub-replies in all communities, but we have kept the sorting order as newest replies first, since we’ve also seen positive feedback about that.

There are a few key differences from how the Community worked in the past:

Sub-replies are currently removed.
To respond directly to another player, you now need to use the Quote button.
When sub-replies are removed, the Reply button is not available. This is unfortunately how the Community works right now, and not something we can change.
Replies are still sorted with the newest replies first, but you can change this yourself inside a discussion if you prefer to see the oldest replies first.

We know this may not be a perfect solution, but maybe it will be easier for players who found the sub-replies confusing or difficult to follow.

We’d love to hear what you think. Player feedback will be one of the main things we use to decide whether we keep sub-replies removed or bring them back. To be fully transparent, we also need to consider technical limitations and any impact this change may have on overall Community engagement numbers.

We are talking about the Reply options @Spinnifix. Before you took a break from the Community you will remember we used to click on the Reply embedded at the bottom of a post, left hand side. And that attached the post in the box you was commenting/replying in. When the Community site was changed in October, that was taken away and a sub-thread reply added, bottom right of the post. In your posts you were putting in the Vanilla thread you and FluffyDinosaur were using that sub-thread reply, which only lasts for approx 5 replies.

But if you click on the, what I call Two Eyes what is classed here as "Quote"

It will attach the post (like the old way of doing it) for you to reply.

The new sub-thread reply has been removed temporarily for us to make comments. If you need more explanation say. I have voted for I prefer non sub-thread replies.

I prefer the old way, but I am going have to take was is given, I know. So, if tagging will work (doesn't always) I will reply to a player in that fashion or I will just have to get used to what options ya'll give me!

Out of interest @FluffyDinosaur will you actually be taking notice of the vote results or mainly of what we are saying. I'm asking as the voting either doesn't work for some or those posting forget/don't know how to vote.

All i know is i stopped joining in with the Community when it all changed, because i had no idea what was happening.

I found the original way easier with the quote button. And i actually prefer the newest posts tagged on the end of a thread, not first.

If none of that makes sense, apologies, but it won't affect me because i won't be posting unless it changes back anyway 🙈

I completely agree @Carol-38 , to be honest this is one of the main reason we opted for keeping the sub-replies, because we thought without the "Reply" button it is very difficult for new players to reply to each other. I'd love it if we could change the quote button, or add the reply button instead - but unfortunately that is not something we can do for now.

I think it's better with the slashes. When I click on it, it says 'Reply'. There's nothing about quoting. That's why I'm unsure.

I'm doing better with the markings, and the answer and the grading are displayed simultaneously.

I don't know what I have to vote for now. It's all too much and confusing for me. Maybe someone can help me!!! PLEASE!!!🙏

No worries at all, it's a valid question! You can find this area from the Community called "Community Lounge" possible to find both from the hamburger menu (under "Games", in the menu in the top left corner) or the front page of the community.

We're trying to figure out a good way to display Community wide information still. Perhaps doing the same poll in all game communities would have worked better - I am not sure.

You need to click on King @christinewupp then scroll past CCC and all the other games right to the end. Then you'll find Community Lounge, once in that click on News. It's a confusing site 🥴

I will also add @FluffyDinosaur, I know I highlighted it in one of my posts below, but I want to make it clearer. The Two Eye reply as it is shown, really isn't helpful at all. It took me a while when everything changed last October to find out how to still reply, attaching the post I wanted to reply to. After a lot of fiddling about I found it was the Two Eyes, I then posted letting others know. Quite a few said thanks, they didn't know. How many in the Community actually know that it is for replying, as all they have been seeing, especially those who have joined since October is (was) the Reply at the bottom right and the empty Leave a Comment box. So how many who will be posting here about what you are asking, actually knows the Two Eyes is also there to click on and send a reply. Shame it can't be shown that it is also a reply feature.

How do I get to "information" from here or from Discussions or Support? I have tried "learn more", but that seems to lead to a dead end. Why is this valuable information (News, Info) so well hidden I can't find it?

I am a little surprised by this post @FluffyDinosaur as most of our previous feedback regarding the new community layout has been met with the response that we are being listened to.

I should firstly point out that my vote (I prefer no sub-replies, using the Quote button, with oldest replies first) doesn't fully represent my opinion but it is the closest option. In reality I do not like to use the quote button or the old Reply button as doing so means posts that are later deleted for whatever reason don't get fully removed. I prefer to just tag a player in a reply.

I have provided feedback before, but to reiterate nested replies do not work for me.

People that use the Western languages (which are the majority of people that use this forum) are taught to read in a left to right and top to bottom directionality. Any reading material that doesn't conform to that directionality makes following a conversation inherently difficult to read.

We are taught from an early age to read in a linear fashion. That is, one point follows another in a logical procession. The nested replies ruin the linear experience that is the base of Western language because they allow for posts outside of the linear reading style we have grown up with.

The whole raison d'être of this forum is communication and for me the nested replies have ruined that basic functionality by removing the linear experience that we are all used to.

I will not read a nested reply that has been folded.

Folded example

No part of an active conversation should be hidden and require a separate action just to read it.

As I have said elsewhere the absolutely worst thing about the nested replies is that you can't find them. That is, when a post is shown as having (for example) seven new replies and you open the thread to read the seven new replies you are generally faced with only a few new replies (say three of the seven) above the 'new posts' line and the rest of the new replies are scattered about the thread in nested replies that you have actively search for to find. If it is a very active thread then finding those new nested replies is extremely difficult and time consuming. I have given up looking. If a post isn't shown in the new posts since last read then it no longer gets read.
