I have 26 names on my friends list right now. I uninstalled Friends about 2 years ago and recently reinstalled it. I believe you're assigned/given friends randomly but not 100% sure in that. Do you have friends that come up when you click on the envelope in top left corner? This is a part of my list.

Is there a way to see if the friends I was assigned are still active? I've only received one request and no lives given since I reinstalled Friends. My level was restored I'm guessing my friends were too? I voted and added I'd like the option to add friends to our list so we have active players.
