You don't spend gold directly on the event: It registers automatically if we spend any gold and will count any gold spent in the game towards the reward. So if you get a reward for this it's a free bonus.

The game has changed a lot in since September. Anything I wrote prior to that may be out of date. Before September the first 200 levels were a lot easier than they are right now. However the last two thousand levels of Candy Crush are always definitely by far the hardest.
