Thank you @Spinnifix for this post, it is amazing how many days of the year are dedicated to certain subjects. This is very fascinating, and although I only learnt German at school, which was a very long time a go 🤣 I do not know any other languages, only a little in Cornish 😊

European Day of Languages

26th September

Throughout Europe, 800 million Europeans represented in the Council of Europe’s 47 member states are encouraged to learn more languages, at any age, in and out of school. Being convinced that linguistic diversity is a tool for achieving greater intercultural understanding and a key element in the rich cultural heritage of our continent, the Council of Europe promotes plurilingualism in the whole of Europe.

Go Cornish exists to give everyone in Cornwall and beyond the opportunity to learn something of the Cornish language, and to discover the culturally rich heritage of our amazing patch of the planet.

I’m American, but I lived in southern region of Belgium for three years in my early teens (my dad was in the military), I was terrible at learning French, alas. I did learn a very useful phrase, to order frites with mayo. 😋

I am quite envious of folks who learn languages easily, I’d love that ability!

Q: What do you call one who can speak three languages?

A: Multilingual.

Q: What do you call one who speaks two?

A: Bilingual.

Q: What do you call one who only speaks one language?

A: An American. 😉

Hi @doncoyote where in Belgium did you stay?

Belgium people are mostly shy but that has to do with our history. We always belonged to other countries. We are independent since 1830. So we are a young country.

You know a lot of languages, that's good for your future.

Nice thread. I just wanted to answer in German and thought... oops, something is wrong here. I didn't expect you to publish it in the community. 

Thank you. I also did not know that there was this day of the European language. 

I myself am rather "lazy as a language". For languages other than my mother tongue, I use a translator. Little remains "stuck" from school lessons if you do not use the language.

Wow 24 official different languages, I also didn't know of this day.

Sadly I'm only bilingual (English and Afrikaans). By the way South Africa has 11 official languages.

Thank you for the info @Spinnifix and @fabke I love learning about other country's especially ones I have always wanted to go to but I am just such a busy mom I have never had the time to travel like that but maybe someday

Bonjour, @fabke! I lived in Hyon, right next to Mons, where my father was stationed at SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe), an international base. It was a wonderful country (their central location made it convenient for visiting other EU countries, but unfortunately also convenient historically during wars for other countries to visit it).

I dearly miss frites (for those not in the know, fries that are fried once, then again when you buy them to crisp them). The people were all very welcoming, whether in the northern (Flemish) or southern (Walloon/French) parts, and the unique vibe created in Brussels where they meet. Oddly, I really miss the grey, rainy weather.

I love languages, I have always been interested in them. For about 3 yrs now, I have been studying Polish on my own, I just really like it a lot. It is difficult, but very interesting and beautiful. I live in the USA, though.
