@Elsa, I suppose there is a different explanation than mine!! ๐๐๐

Here is what Google has to say about it.
Why are candy canes shaped that way?
Because of the shepherds in the Nativity story, the choirmaster bent the candy sticks into canes to represent the shepherd's crook. The cane-shaped candy sticks became a tradition at the church. Their popularity eventually spread to other areas throughout Europe.
Another persistent tale explaining the origin story of the candy cane says a 1600s German choirmaster made peppermint candy sticks, which were a popular treat, in the shape of a cane to quiet down rowdy choir boys โ the cane shape was intended to represent a shepherd's staff.
Additionally, what were candy canes originally used for? The original candy cane was made 350 years ago. Over time the candy cane has become a symbol and tradition during the Christmas holiday, used as a decoration for Christmas trees. The first candy cane was not made in the shape of a cane. It was white, completely straight and only flavored with sugar.
In this regard, why is a candy cane red and white?
The white base color of the candy cane symbolizes Jesus' purity; the red stripes symbolize Jesus' blood when he died on the cross; and the J shape was chosen to represent the J in Jesus.
What is the curved part of a candy cane called?

@Elsa - Thanks for the brief history on candy canes. I used to hang them on our Christmas tree until the cat came along. Candy canes are pretty on the tree but I can't eat them because I am allergic to anything with minty flavor.
