World Thrombosis Day on 13 October: "Better information for patients and strengthening mechanical thrombosis prophylaxis" Every year, more than 40,000 people die in Germany alone as a result of pulmonary embolism. The most common cause is thrombosis.

Clinical picture of pulmonary embolism due to thrombosis

A pulmonary embolism is caused by a blood clot, which usually forms in the leg veins and from there is washed into the pulmonary arteries. Here there is a risk of subsequent vascular occlusion. The clinical consequences are sometimes life-threatening and require rapid intervention. "Preventive measures contribute to the prevention of thrombosis and help to maintain the quality of life of patients and possibly even prevent fatal complications," say the experts of the BVMed Department of Thrombosis Prophylaxis.

Prevention measures

As many scientific studies show, a combination of mechanical and pharmacological measures offers the best prevention of venous thromboembolism and should always be based on an individual risk assessment, the BVMed experts explain.

In addition to drug thrombosis prophylaxis, it is above all the physical measures that, when used correctly, help to prevent thromboembolic complications simply and almost without side effects. For example, medical thrombosis prophylaxis stockings increase the venous return velocity in immobile patients and, in combination with drugs, thus ensure optimized protection against thromboembolism.

Another way to protect immobile patients from thromboembolic complications during and after surgery is intermittent pneumatic compression. It can be used either as a supplement or alternatively in all cases in which drug prophylaxis is excluded or can not be used or only very cautiously used due to the risk of bleeding. Ideally, physical and pharmacological measures complement each other to create a coherent concept. Based on current study results, intermittent pneumatic compression is increasingly being taken into account in the guidelines of the various professional societies.

"Physical prophylaxis is one of the three essential pillars for the prevention of venous thrombosis and its consequences, such as post-thrombotic syndrome or pulmonary embolism," says the BVMed. "Pharmacological measures are not sufficient according to the current state of science. If possible, physical and pharmacological measures should be sensibly combined."

The BVMed represents over 230 manufacturers and suppliers in the medical technology industry as well as aid service providers and homecare providers. The medical device industry employs more than 235,000 people in Germany and invests around 9 percent of its turnover in research and development. The total turnover of the industry is over 34 billion euros, the export quota at 66 percent. 93 percent of medtech companies are SMEs. The BVMed is the voice of the German medtech industry and especially of medtech smes.
