What is accessibility about? ๐ Accessibility Month
Hi everyone! For the month of May, weโre celebrating Accessibility Month. You can read more about everything accessibility-related going on in Community HERE.
So what is accessibility actually about?
Accessibility is the practice of making information, activities, and environments meaningful and usable for as many people as possible. It means everyone should have the same opportunity to access information, engage in the same interactions and enjoy the same activities.ย
Accessibility features in games have gained more attention in recent years. These are great advances as gaming is fun for everyone and should adapt to everyone's different abilities and disabilities. This is why, this month, we want to highlight and raise awareness of the importance of accessibility!
For King, accessibility is vital in making our games playable and enjoyable to as many people as possible. By improving these features, we can make our games more inclusive, allowing everyone to enjoy the Kingdom!
How does accessibility work in games?ย
Accessibility features in games can mean different things, such as:
- Colorblind modes or designing the game so that players with any form of color blindness can still see whatโs going on. (For example, having different shapes for the different colored candies).
- Customization - letting the players themselves change settings or configure the game so it works for them specifically, like the Accessibility menu in Candy Crush Friends Saga.
- Readability - making sure the fonts and texts used in the game are big enough and easy to read for everyone.
- Narration, having a voice read the text on the screen out loud for players with visual impairment.
- And much more!

Why is accessibility so important?
Approximately 15% of the worldโs population lives with some form of disability according to a report from WHO in 2021. That means that more than one billion people could face daily challenges when using todayโs conventional digital devices. Perhaps you are, or know someone who is disabled? Either way, we believe everyone should be able to enjoy and play King games, and thatโs why accessibility is so important to us!

Fortunately I have not had to search for any accessibility features but I am well aware how some have a need to be able to access any of our games or forums with ease regardless
I think the voice sounds amazing and being able to customise how you can view txt
Any small thing that can alleviate stress by easing engaging is more than amazing

I know that there are quite a few players with vision problems and think it is very important that the studio continues to work on providing options and assistance to players with various accessibility issues. It is a very worthwhile and important endeavor.

I know some, but very little. I use my laptop to see better and steer away from my phone device as it is harder to do reading and with some of my game play

It works my brain during free time such as waiting for an appointment etc.

I am just able to get by, need to learn more

None, but need to learn to expand game help text on mobile device to be able to read it. Text on laptop also

I'm very happy with this specialty

This paragraph I'm assigning to some of my students.
Maybe it's tiring to try some education by playing.
But I find them happy, and that's the most important thing.

Yes, I've had some conversations with @Elsa who has been on the subject of accessibility in Candy Crush Friends. In addition, we also had a joint conversation with @TheFishsta, who also takes care of the topic of accessibility in games.
๐ Why is it important to you to be able to play games?
On the one hand, I want to relax while playing, if I want to find some peace after a hard day's work - On the other hand, playing also promotes the ability to think and a forward-looking approach.
๐ Do you use accessibility features while playing games or in the forum?
I use a translator in the forum because I don't speak English. Not sure what is meant by "accessibility" means.ย
๐ What settings do you use to improve our games for you?
I don't use any settings in the game. But I use certain devices to play. I have a visual impairment and therefore play predominantly on devices with a larger screen. On the phone, I can't play most games because the figures/candies are too small. Only Pyramid Solitaire, Blossom Blast and Candy Crush Jelly I can play well on my phone.
Incidentally, the level designers can also do something for accessibility. In Candy Crush I had once asked not to design the sugar coats in several layers. That worked for quite a while. In recent times, these blockers are increasingly used again. That I am a real problem for people with visual impairments.
Here are 2 examples of what I mean by the different layers of sugar coats in Candy Crush. Level 9380 is already very difficult to recognize. At level 9351 I even have difficulties on the laptop.ย On a phone, I couldn't play these levels at all because I don't see what combinations I could do.
