Happy Chinese New Year @Diamond_Lim, @wykoon and everyone! ๐
#2023 #YearoftheRabbit
The origins of the Chinese New Year can be traced back to around 3,500 years ago. The legend goes there was a mythical beast called Nian (ๅนด็ธ) who would come to a village every new year and attack the people. But then a wise old man discovered that Nian was afraid of loud noises and the colour red. And therefore, the people of today decorate their houses in red (which is considered a very lucky colour in China) and set off firecrackers.
Red envelopes, more commonly known as Hong Bao (in Mandarin) or Lai See (in Cantonese), are gifts presented at social and family gatherings such as weddings or holidays such as Chinese New Year. The red color of the envelope symbolizes good luck and is a symbol to ward off evil spirits.

It's a good thing because this doesn't exist in Germany, otherwise I'd be a Struwwelpeter. That's not for me. I heard you shouldn't wash your clothes on New Year's Eve. Here is the text:
The superstition not to wash clothes between the years has to do with the driving away of the evil spirits who are said to be up to mischief during this time. The demons, according to superstition, could get caught in the laundry hung to dry, get angry and take revenge.

HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR of the RABBIT 2023!! ๐ฅณ ๐งง๐
One fact that is cherished: On Chinese New Year's Eve or New Year's Day, young children and grandchildren give their best wishes to their parents and grandparents. In return,ย grandparents and parents give gifts of red envelopes with money in them to their children and grandchildren. This is their way of wishing them good luck in the new year. Sounds like a sweet thing to do just for the children.
