I know how you feel. I haven't been playing Candy Crush Friends regularly, and most of my scores are 5 digits. I don't really know how to control the scores I get, I just keep playing and get lucky sometimes. I hope you keep trying, and have good luck!

As you surmised, 3rd thru 9th receive no extra rewards, other than the participation badge. The idea behind this is to make it fairer for players of all skills.
