It's a voluntary thing and if other players don't do the same, you rarely get lives back.
I always use di 10 or 20 minutes of endless life from the honeyed calendar for a longer playing time.

I am level 1313, and the entire time I have been playing this game, I have always wondered what’s the difference of getting 1,2, or 3 star? There is no incentive to strive for 3 star since I don’t see getting anything but higher points.
