It doesn't matter who spent money, just whose account it was spent from. You can start a new account, new e-mail-address, don't pay anything and you might just get ads on there.

I'm not defending anything. You just can't know if someone is always online, if you're not also online. And there are many top players playing non-stop during the last stages of this tournament.

How do you know these players haven't stopped playing? You only see them, when you're online too. They could say the same thing about you if you're online at the same time.
