As long as you actively connected your game to either Facebook or Kingdom, your progress will be saved and synced to it. If you did, when you reconnect to that account in the game again, the progress from the point where it was last synced will come up.

Do you also have the Facebook app installed or do you sign in through Safari? If you start making request from your iPad only, the lives should come through to there.

I think you should focus on working out where this error is coming from so you can avoid the game from closing randomly. That way you can keep your game session open and not lose any unread message when it's closed as I don't see that ever changing, it's been like that for as long as I can remember. There's only one way, If you actively connected your game to either Facebook or Kingdom then you will have a back up of your progress. When you connect to that account in the game again, the progress tied to it will appear.

You can earn boosters in random events but I don't think you get many chances to earn Gold Bars in Pet Rescue, if at all.

The events with treasure chest don't run all the time but selected periods instead so you won't always see them. They look to be linked to Facebook and Kingdom so you need to be actively connected to them in order for it to appear. So if you don't see it in your game, check your connection. Did the treasure chests come up at all on your new phone? The only thing that carries over if you play on another device is your progress and Gold Bars as the rest is locally stored.

If it's that bad I'd start of by reinstalling the game if it's closing down every time like that. What model iOS do you have exactly?

There not linked technically as far as I can tell, as the messages you receive on your tablet can be kept for a little while whereas the ones on PC will be wiped when the game session is closed. If you play on PC and start requesting lives, you should see the inbox appear once you get some coming through.
