@Pummy Raj yes the levels can be very hard.. even the ones not marked hard.  But I am stubborn   249 is pretty high as well !  So Congrats!  You can check the Video Section here as it can be helpful just to see how someone else did it. Usually the key is focusing on making special candy and combos

Yep! That's what I usually do   Any special candy I am able to / can create -- Wrapped / Striped / Color Bomb / Coloring candy (Thumbs-up).

I have also noticed that we DO NOT HAVE to pick the "Recommended" friend (by the game).  I usually choose "Yeti" for "freeing Octopuses" & Odus for "Fill the Hearts"   

Usually, it's the lack of moves I cannot win the level(s).  Aware of tactics though
