They are only for mobile devices and they can only be used on one mobile device. Each day you should receive a new message that will grant you unlimited lives for another 24 hours. The Unlimited lives will go through Sunday.
What mobile platform (make/model) do you use? Have you tried clearing your cache, making sure you have the latest update of the game app and then shut you device off for 15-20 seconds. When you turn it back on and reenter the game - does the free lives show up? If not, you may have to wait until tomorrow to get the pop-up message again.
