I am on my laptop. About two-three weeks ago I started noticing that I was not receiving any lives from my friends on Candy Crush when I use to receive a bunch.

As there are many players around the world who play CCFS, there can be sometimes a delay in receiving lives. This has something to do with your internet connection and/or social media networks. I recommend sending the lives and checking with your friends to see if they are receiving the message and sending them back.
The Studio is constantly working on improving this in-game feature. If youβre having issues, please feel free to reach out to one of the CMs and they will look into it.

Understood that you are not receiving lives from your friends as usual. You friend may have been experiencing the Facebook issue connectivity that affects their friends' list. You can read about it here.
Nevertheless, if you are out of lives and desperately want to continue playing and your life timer is still being recharged, you may play the game in another device other than your laptop i.e. mobile phone, if you have downloaded the game there. You can just sign in to the game using your usual FB account and your progress in your phone will be synced with FB. This is what I would normally do if I want to pass a level desperately and couldn't wait for the life to be fully recharged. Do remember to exit game from the device you're playing before moving to the next if you wish to apply this steps.
