I went to the troubleshooting tab but could not find the app active page.....look around but searching others app headings and nothing. Then I followed your instructions about checking app update etc. And I didn’t get anywhere. I think I’m going to have to just forget about playing Candy Crush because nothing seems to be working. I would have thought they would have a number to call to speak to someone live....very disappointing.
However I would like to thank those who tried to help me.

When your Facebook friends disappear and you see these players with King characters as avatars, means that your game lost the Facebook connection and then automatically got connected to a King account.
King account connected players have these King characters as avatars.
To fix this, simply get the game back Facebook connected. If the game appears to be connected already, disconnect Facebook and reconnect.
Make also sure the game has access to your Facebook friends list. This permission will automatically expire every 90 days. Check the link @Sukanta_Biswas posted.

Let's try the following to force the game to connect to your Facebook.
-Disconnect the game from Facebook under the game's Settings (Start menu - Profile - Log out)
-Delete the Facebook app from the device (Not the game! Facebook only)
-Close all tabs in Safari and clear the browser cache by going to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data (this may vary on some iPhone and iPad models - please check Apple Support for further help and details)
-Turn off the device and wait about 30 seconds to clear the cache on the device
-Turn on the device again
-Open Safari, go to Facebook's web page and log in to your Facebook account through the browser
-Open the game and connect it to Facebook and the game should now connect your account through the browser
