Hello and welcome to the community. As Janicka said, you buy shovels with them or use them to help beat rancid, or activate companions. If you haven't bought shovels before, when you have no shovels, click on the shovels booster before you hit play, to buy 3 shovels for 250 beans.

Its a fine balance between making the game too easy and too hard. Also, you found it easy and I distinctly remember struggling on some of those levels, so I appreciated the really easy ones.
