Happy St Patricks day everyone!
Fun facts about St Patricks day.
Did you know that he wasn't actually Irish? He came from Britain but was possibly Welsh or Scottish depending on which web site you look at.
For many years, blue was the colour most often associated with St. Patrick. Green was considered unlucky. St. Patrick's blue was considered symbolic of Ireland for many centuries and the Irish Presidential Standard is still blue.
youāll often see the four-leaf clover on St. Patrickās Day. However, according to legend, Patrick used aĀ three-leafĀ clover, or shamrock, as part of his teachings. Even though it's possible for a shamrock to grow a fourth leaf, a four-leaf clover is just considered a symbol of good luck.
Legend has it that St. Paddy stood on a hilltop, dressed in his formal green attire, and waved his staff to herd all the slithering creatures into the sea, expelling them from the Emerald Isle forever. And low and behold, there hasnāt been a snake seen in Ireland since 461 AD ( except for the odd household pet and zoo creature). When snakes first evolved ā about 100 million years ago ā Ireland was still submerged under water, so migrating to Ireland wasnāt an option for the serpents.
However, when the ocean finally did drop and Ireland surfaced, it was attached to mainland Europe, therefore allowing the slithery creatures, to make their way onto the land.
All taken from google so it would be really interesting if any of our Irish players can tell us some more legends or squash supposed facts!
Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone
"May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow." š
