Shutting down the device in order to stop the unlimited lives timer was an exploit, it was only a matter of time until they caught on and patched it.

Some events and features don't always get rolled out to everyone or are in testing so if someone you know has something you don't, it doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong with your game. Just make sure that your game is actively connected to either Facebook or Kingdom and that you've got the latest updates installed.
