Sometimes I am not sure what the different gifts do and I use the wrong one. Is there anyway to just put cursor over it and have it show its benefit is and best time to use?

Do you mean the time-limited boosters? It says how long the time is left. Play the level once beforehand and the 2nd time you will know which booster is best to use.
