Gülsüm Kav, 47, is a Turkish doctor and activist who co-founded We Will Stop Femicides, a grassroots platform where female volunteers fight against gender-based violence and impunity. What is the most concrete issue Turkish women are facing today?
Men are beating and killing us, and part of that is because women are financially dependent on them. Unemployment for women in Turkey is a big problem. We have too many women who aren’t taking part in the workforce. We’re behind all other European countries, even Iran. We’ve seen that, when women join the workforce, men step back and violence against women decreases. The construction industry is one of the biggest in Turkey and women don’t even make up 1% of that industry.

Remembering the first Queen of England of African descent
Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, originally named Sophie Charlotte was born on May 19, 1744. Queen Charlotte also held the titles of Electress of Hanover and Queen Consort of Hanover.Queen Charlotte is a descendant of a black branch of the Portuguese royal family; more specifically, Alfonso III and his concubine, Ourana, a black moor. In the 13th century, Alfonso III seized a town named Faro from the moors. He also demanded that the governor of Faro’s daughter become his concubine. They birthed three children.

The African Princess: Sarah Forbes Bonetta
Queen Victoria was so impressed by the girl’s natural regal manner and her gift for academic studies, Literature, Art and Music that she gave her an allowance for her welfare and Sarah became a regular visitor to Windsor Castle. Sarah’s genius became admired throughout the royal court and she continued to outshine her tutors with her advanced abilities in all studies.
At the age of 18, Sarah received a proposal from James Pinson Labulo Davies, a 31 year old Yoruba businessman of considerable wealth who was living in Britain. Shortly after her marriage, Sarah gave birth to a daughter and was granted permission by the Queen to name the child Victoria – the Queen also became her Godmother.

Celia Cruz
Ursula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso was born in Havana in 1925 in the working class neighborhood of Santos Suárez. She was born to sing. Fania Records co-founder Jerry Masucci had an eye for talent. Cruz crossed into the mainstream when she appeared in the film The Mambo Kings; she later recorded a duet with David Byrne, “Loco de Amor,” for the film Something Wild. She went on to collaborate with Gloria Estefan, La India, Tito Puente and many more. Keeping up with the times, in 2001 Celia recorded “La Negra Tiene Tumbao” (“The Black Woman Got Style”), produced by Sergio George, featuring Puerto Rican Reggaeton artist Mikey Perfecto. The hit song combines elements of Salsa, Rap, and Hip Hop.
