Based on your description, it seems that we have slightly different versions of the same level. My version has only 16 moves. Did you have +3 moves from a friend? Agreed, these timed boosters take me by surprise, so I end up ignoring them. I wish those boosters weren't timed. I like being able to control when I start my timed boosters.

My strategy seems to be a combination of A and D, and it has allowed me to amass loads of boosters and gold bars very quickly.
