Hey Carah, By the sounds of it you might be using an iPad Mini 1st generation, or an iPad 2. Apple stopped making those iPads and they no longer release iOS updates for those either.

Your device has the same processor as the iPad 2 that came out in 2011; soon 6 years ago. Nowadays it´s going to be pretty tough to find a new device running on a 512 MB Ram processor.
