I should have mentioned that when I re-installed, I went back to zero. Oh, well, it's just a game....

FWIW, I just uninstalled the game and re-installed it. When I launched it, it came up with the narrow screen described above, but then expanded to almost full screen size. Many thanks to the forum for the uninstall/re-install suggestion. I don't know why the app doesn't update itself, though.
