Hi @channie8
I couldn't let World Autism Month go by without mentioning someone very close to my heart.
We have a beautiful six-year-old in our family who has a diagnosis of autism. She is very bright and artistic, but has difficulty coping with change.
People with autism should certainly never be under-estimated and should be encouraged because of their great abilities in so many different and specialist fields.
@janeau_owl I work some with kids with different autism spectrums. I find many times they get fixated on a subject or an object. I use their fixation as a learning tool. One child was fixated on power stations. So we went to the library and read all we could about how power stations worked. Drew pictures. Used power stations to add. Ie 2 power stations plus 3 power stations ECT. Used power stations to demonstrate emotions. I put a smile on a power station and explained this power station iss happy and so on. It is so rewarding to find a way to get a connection.
