If you want to force an orientation and save development and maintenance costs, force landscape. It is the better mode and many games played on phones force this orientation. It makes the most sense.

I agree. I thought I accidentally activated phone mode. Even on a phone I would probably want landscape mode. I have never played on a phone and don't want to.
