Exactly the same problem on my Windows 10 PC. What you describe is identical to what is happening when I try to load the game through Facebook.

Thank you for your suggestion Queen B. I deleted the game from Facebook and reinstalled it but it came back exactly as I left it. I think I shall stop playing as I will be unable to progress much further without my store of beans
