I am not sure what has happened, but while I was playing a bunch of players were added like an hour ago and I have no idea where they came from. I have been since yesterday when the semi-final round started. My question: Is it normal for that many gamers to be added in one group like literally 15 hours before the game/event ends and you were ahead with a chance to win only to have your hopes dashed because they added someone in your group that is sooo far ahead there is no chance of catching them? If I lose I lose, but it just seems odd that this would happen.

Yes, this can happen when many players take part. Players are not being added at a later moment, it's the system that is catching up and updates the leaderboards with a delay.

It'd be odd if the current leaderboards kept on having few participants. All the players who qualified in a previous round have earned a spot in the current round and they all started to play at the same time. They're bound to appear in the current leaderboards either they collect candies or not.

The delay can happen in normal Kimmy's Candy Hunt too but the effect might be perceived differently and worse here because the rounds of the tournaments are shorter than Kimmy's Candy Hunt normal rounds.
