I play each morning around the same time, but if I launch the app just 24 hours and 5 minutes since when I played yesterday my wonderballs expire and I have to start the level over. That doesn't seem too fair, can it be extended a bit?

an option to extend it exists but it may not be available to all players at the same time. In this option a message pops up after players did not reach the wonderball in time . if players decide not to break the streak and start over, they're required to buy an extra hour with gold bars.
Afraid not. Next time don't click "play now", click "maybe later" instead. Then next day before you start playing new levels, just go to activate Batula feature.
