Hello, I no longer have any regular lives, so I go to my friends' lives, see that three friends have sent me lives, accept them, and then only have one life available.

You will only be able to see you have lives received if you only have less than 5 lives available. If you for example have 4 lives, and accept one, then that would be why you wouldn't see the remaining 4 lives your friends sent you being added to your inventory. While you might receive five separate life requests, they don't all stack up to five lives; you'll only get one life credited to your game. This is a long-standing technical problem that the game's developers are aware of, but it hasn't been fully resolve.The most likely reason is a technical problem within the game's system for handling friend requests and live exchanges.
Developer Awareness: The issue has been reported by many players to the game's team, but it remains an ongoing problem.
