Check the App store to see if you have the update available. If your old iPad cannot install the update then there's nothing you can do.

As long as you actively connected your game to either Facebook or Kingdom, your progress will be saved and synced to it. If you did, when you reconnect to that account in the game again, the progress from the point where it was last synced will come up.

Not sure on this one but for all apps in general, updates don't always mean new content as it can also be modifications and fixes for existing things. already in the app.
