The article here explains the piggy bank. But basically, you're earning them at a discounted price. So instead of buying through an offer that only appears now and again, you can buy them cheaper regularly if you want to. You don't have to.
Remember that the game is free to play. Any gold you want to buy is optional as a premium extra. They still need to pay for the running costs of the game and staff etc
