Farm Heroes Saga is turning 12 years old this month! ๐
And we couldnโt celebrate without you, our amazing farming community!
Over the years, youโve helped shape the game in so many ways, from sharing feedback on tricky levels to jumping into events and cheering on new features. Thank you for being part of the journey ๐
To celebrate this special moment, we spoke with someone who knows Farm inside and outโฆ
๐จโ๐พ Meet Massimo!
(Massimo, awestruck in front of his animal portrait at the King office! ๐)
Massimo is a Senior Game Designer on Farm Heroes Saga.
He has worked a lot on gameplay in Farm, helping shape how the game feels, plays, and challenges you.
With many years of experience on Farm, he brings a deep understanding of what makes levels fun, tricky, and rewarding โจ
We asked Massimo a few questions about the game today, and what heโs excited about for the future!
๐ Anniversary Interview with Massimo!
๐ Q: Some levels can feel really tricky at times. How does the team balance challenge and fun in Farm? And are you exploring ways to help players who feel stuck?
๐ฆ Massimo: One of the things I love most about Farm is how different goals connect with each other! When I used to build levels, I focused on creating a smooth sense of progression. Breaking things into smaller mid-goals, like clearing easier blockers first, helps open up the board and gives you more ways to approach the level. Often, what seems impossible at first becomes achievable by trying a different tactic. For example, clearing a path for a Bull can help you both collect a Poppy and boost your Cropsiesโ targets.
That said, we know some levels can feel tough. Our Level Designers regularly review how players progress and adjust levels that feel too challenging. Alongside that, weโre always improving things like boosters and event rewards to give players extra help when they need it.
To not take up too much space, we put the rest of the interview in parts for blocks, press the block below to open and read the full interview! ๐๐
๐ Q: Players sometimes notice changes to how blockers or elements look. Whatโs the goal behind these tests, and what are you hoping to learn from them?
๐ฆ Massimo: Farm Heroes Saga is still, after many years, one of the most loved King games. Over time, weโve learned a lot about what players enjoy and where they can run into difficulties. Making the game easy to read and understand is really important to us.
We want everyone to clearly see whatโs happening on the board, so we keep improving things like colors, backgrounds, buttons, and text size to suit different needs. For example, we updated the Ice blocker after feedback that it was hard to see what was inside. The new version makes it clearer which Cropsie is frozen. Weโve made similar updates to Poppies and other elements, and weโll keep refining visuals so the game stays clear, fresh, and enjoyable to play.
๐ Q: Mini-games felt like a big change when they first arrived, and now theyโre a big part of the game. How do you see them today, and are there any new ideas youโre exploring?
๐ฆ Massimo: Mini-games have become a really fun part of Farm. Theyโre quick to pick up, easy to play, and give our artists a chance to bring the Cropsies to life in creative ways, like a carrot driving a tractor!
Weโre continuing to explore new ideas for these bite-sized experiences, often inspired by well-known hobbies but with a Farm twist. Itโs a space where we can really experiment, so you can expect more playful surprises in the future, including one inspired by a game many of us grew up with.
๐ Q: Boosters can make a big difference on difficult levels. How do you approach designing and updating boosters, and what are you thinking about for the future?
๐ฆ Massimo: Boosters are an important part of Farm, giving players a helpful extra push when a level gets tricky. Weโre always looking at how they feel to use and how they fit into the overall experience.
Right now, weโre working on improving the booster selection, making some feel more satisfying to use, adjusting others, and refreshing whatโs available before and during a level. Weโre also building on what we hear from players, so over time youโll start to see that in how boosters show up in the game. Iโm really excited to see how both new and long-time players react!
๐ Q: Without giving too much awayโฆ what are you most excited about for Farm in 2026?
๐ฆ Massimo: Iโve been lucky to work closely on Farmโs core experience, so Iโve seen a lot of whatโs coming. Weโre putting a lot of care into improving different parts of the game while keeping what makes Farm special.
Over time, players will start to notice these updates coming together. Iโm especially excited about how the gameplay is evolving, itโs all about creating a warm, engaging experience where new ideas fit naturally into the cozy Farm players enjoy every day.
Now we also want to make sure to celebrate the anniversary as well, so here are a few extra questions we asked Massimo, focusing on the theme of the Farm Birthday! ๐
๐ Q: Whatโs one thing about Farm that youโre proud of?
๐ฆ Massimo: Farm is full of personality! The Cropsies are right there on the board, bringing charm to a classic match-3 experience that weโre always trying to evolve in new ways.
What Iโm most proud of, though, is the team behind it. Over the years, many people have contributed to Farm, and thereโs a shared care and passion that keeps it growing and improving.
๐ Q: Do you have a favorite moment from working on Farm?
๐ฆ Massimo: One moment that really stands out was before we released Crate Escape, when we met players in London to talk about the feature and the game.
Hearing their stories and seeing how much they care about Farm was incredibly meaningful. Some shared how the game supported them during difficult times, which really stayed with me. Itโs easy to focus on numbers and challenges when working on a game, but moments like that remind you how much it can matter to people. Being able to connect, listen, and share those experiences is something Iโll always remember.
๐ Q: Describe Farm in three words for the birthday!
๐ฆ Massimo:
- Heartwarming: Thanks to the charming art style and the lively characters (yes, even you, Rancid!) ๐
- Evergreen: 12 years and still loved by so many players ๐
- Cropsies: I couldnโt resist! They bring so much personality, especially favorites like the Water Cropsie with its curious eyes, and the Onion with its tiny tears ๐
