When my friends send me lives and I click to receive them, I have to invite more friends, if I don't my lives dissappear! Why is that?

When I need life, I click on the envelope icon that can be seen on the left. I usually only accept 4 out of a maximum of 5 lives and the others remain saved until I click on the envelope again.
What happens in your game when you click on the envelope? Do you have a screenshot so I can understand it better?
