13 October: International Day for Disaster Reduction



In 1989, Disaster Reduction Day was proclaimed by the United Nations. Motto 2021: "International cooperation for developing countries to reduce their disaster risk and losses". 


The UN writes on Disaster Reduction Day:

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 outlines seven clear targets and four priorities for action to prevent new and reduce existing disaster risks: (i) Understanding disaster risk; (ii) Strengthening disaster risk governance to manage disaster risk; (iii) Investing in disaster reduction for resilience and; (iv) Enhancing disaster preparedness for effective response, and to "Build Back Better" in recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction.

It aims to achieve the substantial reduction of disaster risk and losses in lives, livelihoods and health and in the economic, physical, social, cultural and environmental assets of persons, businesses, communities and countries over the next 15 years.

The Framework was adopted at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai, Japan, on March 18, 2015.


There is a global initiative for Disaster Reduction Day

Sendai Framework


An important document on this topic is the "Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030". It was adopted at the Third United Nations World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (March 2015 in Sendai, Japan). According to its own statements, it offers a "concise, precise, forward-looking and action-oriented framework for disaster risk reduction for the period after 2015". Day of Disaster Prevention in Germany?


The competent authority is the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance In 2019, a press release was published there on UN Day, through which the Office would like to "recall". We have not found any more recent declarations or other activities on World Disaster Prevention Day, although officially the National Contact Point for Implementation in Germany has been located at the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) since 2017.
