Here in Canada, it’s called Remembrance Day
The beautiful poem: In Flanders Field was written by a Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae who wrote the poem on May 3d, 1915 after presiding over a funeral of a friend who died May 2nd. He wrote it in the back of an ambulance and it referenced to the poppies that grew on the graves of fallen soldiers. It is believed that he had discarded the poem, not satisfied with it and a fellow soldier picked it up and the poem was published on December 8 of that year.
