Congradulation for reaching Level 40. Well done.
To answer your question: "I really don't understand what are those hats and cards."
Stella has three hat colors. The brown hat increaseds your score.
After earning the brown hat and playing the game three times. I suggest going back to Level one and playing that three times, on the next play where you clear the level you are at. I am assuming it will be Level 41 or above. You should earn a Blue hat. The Blue hat lets Stella randomly lauch a blasting bubble that can really help you from time to time.
After 5 plays, you can earn a Gold Hat which is good for a one time play and destroys about twenty lines. You cannot accumulate Gold Hats; however, you can go back and almost earn another Gold Hat when you complete 5 Blue Hat plays. That way you'll have a Gold Hat and one coming up to help you complete a stubborn level.
Playing "Wake up the Tree" with the other players can give you 2 boosters from the first three boosters. Just depends on the players clearing the tree. You can also earn a Bubble Blast and earn 3 hours of free play. If your earn 2 Stereo bolts, you also get 3 hours of free game time. The other 2 boosters give you 1 hour of free game time.
When you play "Wake up the Tree:" always go back to Card 1 Levels 1-10 most of the "Wake up the Tree" challenges can be won there playing those levels.

The Cards are just references for the Levels you play. Gold Cards are desirable but not necessary when first starting out.
