Here’s my fun fact about Penguins - They have three eyelids: Little penguins have one eyelid at the top, one at the bottom, and a clear membrane that acts like goggles underwater.

What is the smallest of the Penguins? The Little Blue Penguin or Fairy Penguin.

New Zealanders

call this penguin the Little Blue Penguin or just Blue Penguin.

Australians

call it the Fairy Penguin. These common names come from their small size, the smallest of any of the world’s penguins, and the distinctive slate-blue or indigo-blue coloration of the feathers on the top of their body.

I actually saw them in the wild on Phillip Island, Australia.

Fun fact: The little penguin Eudyptula Novaehollandiae (aka fairy penguin) is native to Australia and New Zealand and is the smallest penguin species in the world. Here is the fun bit: this penguin is about the size of a bowling pin and weighs just under a kilogram - that's about 2 pounds for our friends who use the Imperial system of weights.

But here is a REALLY funny fun fact: I actually thought Odus was an Owl!!!!! Right up until I read this competition. Absolutely True Story. And I HAVE that outfit that clearly is a penguin in a penguin suit! Oh deary me. It's a shame really because if Odus were an owl I could say "what a hoot".
I'm not entering the competition btw, just wanted to share my latest confusion with you all.

As though the black and white “tuxedo” look donned by most penguin species makes thel look like they are going to a very posh evening outing, it actually is a clever camouflage called countershading:

when swimming, the black on their backs helps them blend in with the darkness of the ocean from predators viewing from above;
their white bellies help them blend in with the bright surface of the ocean when viewed by predators and prey from below.
