jelly 640 different layout

It seems level 640 had its layout changed. From the videos I've seen, supposedly there's a column to the left that's currently missing in the current layout. I can see that there's a column there, but it does nothing apart from dropping candies in a particular fashion.

Was this an intended update? It's pretty hard to beat it.
