This problem just started. When I reached level 400, and played two chocolate balls together the game started freezing and locking up.

Hey are you playing on an Android or iOS tablet? Make sure that you don't have other apps running in the background, and that you have plenty of memory left on your device. Also a restart of the device can fix some problems. Let us know if this works
