Is there a trick to making either vertical or horizontal striped candies? Or is it just by chance which way the stripes go?

If you make one stripe, it's direction is determined by how you made the stripe. If you made an up or down movement in making the stripe, that stripe is up/down. If you make a horizontal movement when making the stripe, it forms as a horizontal stripe. That is what I have experienced.
The direction of the candies smashed will depend on the direction of the stripes on the Candies. Matching a colour bomb with a striped Candy is pretty epic too!
