Lost Lives

So I'm playing Candy Crush...my lives are full and 2 friends sent me lives. So I played the game until I went through the original 5 lives, went to get my 2 lives from my friends and they were gone. Do I have to retrieve them while I still have a few lives left? I know if I retrieve them while I have full lives they disappear, which sucks. But I can't go to them once I finish with the original 5?
