Cannot send or receive lives or 3+ moves booster, or request lives from friends in Candy Crush Saga

After not being able to load the game (progress stuck at 68%) for weeks, I can now play again but I despair of catching up to my friends (they are at 1400th level now, I'm still back at 1341) because I cannot get lives or 3+ move boosters. Can't send them either. Also, the messages I have for all games are over 14 hours old, so maybe it's a message problem rather than a game problem. Yes, I did clear the cache and cookies, installed a new Adobe Flash plugin today, and did various other restarts and flushes, and tried using three different browsers (four really, but I don't count the out-of-date one that I don't usually use at King.com). I wish there was some way to find out if King is having a "slight technical issue" again or if there's something I can do locally to remedy this. Anyone know?
