The mute button for music does not work.

I don't like the music but I do like the sounds. However the mute music button within the game does not work on my macbook air. I don't want to mute the computer because I want the sounds. I have searched everywhere for any answer but no one else seems to have asked the question. Don't tell me just to check whether the mute button has been pushed because it has and the red line is there.
