Lost all Candy Crush progress when syncing with facebook

After trying to sync with facebook, I've lost my previous avatar and all my levels (2877!) and gone back to Level 1.  3 years' progress down the drain! I didn't have a facebook app until today so I seem to have no fall-back.  I'd be really, really grateful to know how to restore the previous position - so close to finishing.  To make things worse, my iPad shows no back-ups ever made on iCloud, which I assumed was automatic.
