Somehow in the middle of my game my matches started producing candies with diagonal bows on them. The circle at the top with the level turned silver. What did i do?

You didn't do anything! You got the new release of a new challenge. I am assuming that you make a match next to the bow and it will open up. Don't know yet how many of those that you have to open when it advances you to the silver mode where you will get rewards and then it will advance to the gold mode where you will get a free party popper. You have to use them while playing that level because it will not get added to your accumulation of boosters.
