Buddy Challenge does not work

I am not able to change or delete my appointed buddy. The person does not play and I an fed up of having to gain points for both of us. All advise on how to change buddies does not work as I do not have a green gear on my screen. I want out of this challenge.

yes you can change your friend, you click to the left or you are both, once open "challenge to two" click on the top left (the red circle with a head and two arrows) and you can change your friend but you will lose your advancement
