If you saved your game via King account you can change the avatar. Tap on the picture
It won’t let me on king either

Correct me if I’m wrong, but did you save your game with Apple Sign In?
When you use your Apple-ID to save the game on, it is not possible to switch or edit the avatar I'm afraid.
When using a King account instead, you can change the avatar since the King account is managed and provided by King.
