Can anyone explain to me why I am being forced to play a game that takes all the boosters and lives I have fought for and struggled for, and just take them away from me to give to other players? I see no reason.

You are not being penalised. As I stated above, it costs you nothing to participate and help others.
Sweet Crew unfortunately resurfaced yesterday for me. I am totally blocked from playing unless I give lives or boosters to others, which can only be interpreted as their way of penalizing players who don't buy enough. There are enough other games out there that don't penalize players so I am done here.
Is this event still about? I had this twice before it disappeared. Same with the candy convertor & the magic hat, all were short lived before disappearing for good.
No game in CandyCrush takes your boosters away. If you gift boosters or lives in sweet crew, or if you gift lives by giving them to your friends in the game, they DO NOT get taken from your inventory! They come from King.
